The internet hasn't been around forever and older generations that didn't grow up using it are still getting used to it. My mother recently learned how to use a computer and has only scratched the surface of the Internets capabilities. She mainly uses the internet for emailing her friends and watching Korean TV shows. She still finds excitement when receiving a new email, even if it is spam and she doesn't fully understand the nuances of spyware and viruses. I often have to remind her not to click on everything she finds interesting. I've also tried to introduce her to newer technology like skype, a program that would allow her to video conference with relatives in Korea. She is still skeptical.
I on the other hand have grown up with the internet and is now ingrained in my daily life. Although I do also use the basic functions of email and video viewing like my mother, the internet has become more a factor of information gathering ,instant communication and entertainment for me. Any bit of information you wish to obtain can usually be easily found via a google search. If I didn't catch the end of the Red Sox game or if I want to know a good recipe for lasagna, it is always a few clicks away. I also engage in instant messaging with friends, where I can have full conversations with people without the lag of email. If I have some extra time to kill, I might engage in online gaming. Online gaming has allowed people all over the world to connect and enjoy a game of cards, chess or whatever else may interest you. Shopping, banking, and even education has now been transferred to the online world.
